At the first station outside of Port Said a police official came in and demanded to see my papers, and opened all my small luggage- all of which I took as a joke.
Reached Cairo at five o’clock and went directly to the Pyramids’ Camp, where I purpose staying with Dr. Reisner until I can make plans for the work of our Expedition.

Saturday, December 19, 1914 - Tuesday, January 12, 1915

Unpacked all the equipment and found everything in good order, with the exception of some porcelain trays for the photographic outfit, these were not sufficiently well packed. Have had Bechari, who is to be the photograph boy of the Expedition, make several pictures of the Pyramids to test the lenses and have found them to be of very excellent definition and depth of focus. I had not felt it wise to buy a very expensive lens, so secured a Cook lens, which had been recommended by an expert photographer in Philadelphia, who had used them with great success. I have been making efforts to get a concession for Tanis but have been unable to do so. It seems that while the German and Austrian concessions…
