On this date the small statuette of Mesty was delivered to our agents, Messer. Congdon & Co., by M. Tano, a Greek antiquity dealer of Cairo. Some time ago through information given me by Mr. Howard Carter I had discovered that our statue, as well as the stele stolen from Dr. Reisner, was in the hands of the dealer. Through Mr. Carter, who had known the dealer for many years, it was arranged that the two pieces be handed over to us on payment of £.E. 120, the amount which the dealer claimed has been given by him to the men who had stolen them. I had previously arranged with Dr. Reisner about the purchase; he agreeing to pay any sum up to £.E. 120 for their recovery. The stele was delivered to Dr. Reisner at the end of October. I received Dr. Reisner’s check for £.E. 120 and sent the dealer £.E. 125 as Mr. Carter wrote to me that he had agreed with the dealer on £.E. 125 not £.E. 120 as originally stated.
