The abovementioned workmen removed the blocking stones of the burial chamber. The debris is rubble and fragments of mud plaster on top of a layer of sand. There is a skeleton in [a] contracted position. We left it for photography and drawing.

Thursday, August 8, 1935, the Pyramids

The workforce was 7 people. Excavation was progressing on (1) Mastaba 5020 and [5020-]Annex shaft [A].

(1) Mastaba 5020 and [5020-]Annex Shaft [A]

Barbary [Ahmed] and 7 workmen were on this mastaba to the north. The debris is limestone chips, rubble, sand, potsherds, and dark soil. They are searching for Annex shafts east of the recently found shaft [A]. We did not find new shafts.

[Mastaba 5020-]Annex Shaft [A]

The abovementioned workmen were in this shaft. They dug down 590 cm. The debris is limestone chips, rubble, potsherds, and dark soil. We found in the fill of the shaft:

1 head of a limestone statue [reserve head] [GEM_13052], missing ears and part of neck

potsherds

Duwy [Mahmoud Ahmed] informed His Excellency, the Director [George A. Reisner], about the head. He ordered us to photograph it and to move it to the office. We did photograph it and moved it to the office. They have not yet reached the rock bottom of the shaft, nor have they found the burial chamber. Here is a drawing of the shaft and the head of the statue that we found. The drawing shows the exact location of the head in relation to the walls of the shaft.
