Thursday, April 11, 1935, the Pyramids

The workforce was 7 people. Excavation was progressing in (1) shaft G 1401 A; (2) Mastaba G 1407; and (3) shaft [G] 1411 C.

(1) Shaft [G] 1401 A

Barbary Ahmed and 7 workmen removed the human bones that were in burial chamber I. They also dismantled the burial chamber, which was built of rubble in the middle of the shaft’s floor on the debris. They dug down 265 cm. in the original shaft. The debris is white limestone chips and rubble. They found burial chamber II to the east. It is cut into the Gebel and sealed with stones and rubble. There are traces of mud plaster [perhaps the stones and rubble were bound with mud mortar]. They have not yet reached the rock bottom of the shaft. We left the blocking stones for photography and drawing. They found in the fill between burial chamber I [i.e., the upper burial chamber] and burial chamber II [i.e., the lower burial chamber]: 1 pottery jar 4 small pottery dishes 1 small pottery cup

(2) Mastaba G 1407

The abovementioned workmen were south and north of this mastaba. The debris is wind-blown sand and mud-brick fragments. They cleared the northern, eastern, and western corners of the mastaba; they have not yet cleared the southern corner.

(3) Shaft G 1411 C

Barbary Ahmed and one workman cleared the rock-cut sarcophagus and then Mr. [Alexander] Floroff drew it. As for the pieces of wood in the sarcophagus, Mr. Bill [William Stevenson Smith] ordered us to leave it and not bring it up because it is insignificant. Here is its drawing:
