excavations of this tomb. Nearly all this group bears evidence of having been opened recently, as the shafts are still partly unfilled by drift sand.
The shaft of Lepsius 23 [= G 2000] is still being cleared. No stones interfere with the work now and only loose sand is encountered. Depth now ca. 10 meters. The masonry lining the shaft is of large well dressed and fitted stones. In southeast angle are the foot holes for descent of workmen.

Received a letter from Mr. MacNaughten in answer to mine addressed to him re the Girga thefts. He is now up the river on a tour of inspection and will soon be at Girga, when here will take the matter up. I have still received not a word from the Mamur about the affair.

Severe showers in forenoon, lasting 15 - 20 minutes. Rest of day clear, sunny but cooler. Dr. Wakeling requested the loan of some track and cars for a few days. All our available track is in use on our large run to dump so I could not let him have it. Most of the track is worn and bent and considerable work has to be done in laying it and new bolts, ties etc. purchased.
Another lot of boxes have arrived of photographic materials, leaving only three lacking to complete the order.
