everything was taken, by the passengers from the Sudan who were a day late. Derry then wired to a friend Mr. Mellen (E.S.R. inspector) who reserved us an ordinary first class compartment, and we were quite comfortable. We started from the house at Naga er-Deir at 8:10 p.m. going by boat to Girga, but the wind failed us midway and we landed at the canal mouth and walked to the station. We ran part of the way and got there about 9:35 with the train due at 9:45. Fortunately the train was ten minutes late. Hafiz Effendi the freight clerk called my attention to the fact that the Giza clerk had undercharged us P50 for the tents etc. sent up for Rowe. Said, it seems, had offered to pay but suggested that the Giza clerk would get into trouble. The thought of cutting off the bread of a fellow clerk was too much for Hafiz Effendi and he dropped the matter.

The work has gone on satisfactory in the streets G 4140, G 4240, G 4340, G 4440, G 4330, as described by Fisher above. But the work is still in a preliminary clearing stage. The rock floor is much higher at G 4330 than it is further north. The space G 4340 shows a heap of limestone debris thrown out from a pit of G 4340 over drift sand and covered
