Worked on the bulletin article re Kerma and Giza all the morning. Dr. Reisner wrote to General Bridges, Commanding Officer of the Australian forces telling him that I was to be left in charge here, and asking him to assist me in every possible way. He also asked him to make the ranges safer, as several bullets have struck around the camp and in the works. Fisher has received a cable from Penn. telling him that the extra money he wanted ($8000.- for this year and $15000.- for next year). I received today from Fisher 10000 piasters to carry on his work while he is away.

Wednesday, January 27, 1915

This forenoon the track is being moved to the N.W. part of the cemetery, where I am to carry on Fisher’s work. Five bullets struck near the workmen, and Dr. Reisner has written another letter to General Bridges. Gave Fisher Pt. [piasters] 500 from box. A sandstorm came up at noon and rapidly increased in violence during the afternoon. A cable came from Mrs. Smith asking for news of Joe Smith. Mr. Murray came to the camp this afternoon. He has been to the Canal and says that at Kantara there are eleven thousand…
