Mr. Dunham left for America. Mr. Arnold told him to pay no attention to the military regulations requiring every one to present himself at the Governor's office at Port Said twenty four hours beforehand to be photographed, etc. Suspecting that this might raise a question of some importance with the military authorities, not wishing Dunham to be delayed and miss his boat, and considering the regulation a reasonable one, I advised Dunham to obey it, which he did.

October 21, 1914

Mr. Arnold came out about sunset bringing the money paid to Abul Hasan by me. He inquired what Dunham had done and showed me a letter from General Maxwell about the passport regulations. Mr. Arnold was making a test case of Dunham and it appeared to me that the General was not pleased. A difference of opinion arose between Mrs. Reisner and Mr. Arnold on the reasonableness of the regulations. She is so incensed at this attitude that she does not wish to see him any more than she can help. I feel a great personal respect for him in spite of all this and aside from politics I must say I like him.

Mr. and Mrs. Quibell, Mr. and Mrs. MacLinglin to dinner. Miss Spears came yesterday to stay until tomorrow. Said and Mahmud have gone to Quft for the holidays and are to bring down one hundred (100) on Tuesday, as I have resolved to begin work.
On October 21, in the evening while reading the Times of October 6, I suddenly saw a notice of the death of Mr. Gardiner M. Lane, which occurred on October 3. I was so grieved and shocked that I could not sleep and even now after ten days my feeling is one of unutterable loss. On October 22, I received a cable from Dr. Fairbanks, "Have written Lane's death twenty thousand (20,000) subscribed this winter."
