Arrived at camp Saturday afternoon after a stay of two days in Cairo to look after supplies, see Basil at museum for renewal of permit, etc. Had left New York 3 p.m. December 13 and reached Cairo December 27 1 p.m. Found camp in fair condition. Upper house all right, but nearly all windows of lower house broken. Mice here had caused some damage to papers, mattresses, etc. Men are very glad to see us back. They report considerable pilfering at Girga, at which the local authorities winked. The Omdeh of Quft still seems a thorn in the flesh. Said Ahmed left Friday night to bring some men down. Several of the men are with the Austrian expedition at Shellal, otherwise our party will be the same as last year. It is good to learn that the pyramid plateau, including the pyramids
